BayTMS started providing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to patients with depression in 2009. We were the first group to do this in the East Bay and the second in the Bay Area. Co-directors Dr. Rick Trautner and Dr. Bob Dolgoff were inspired by an emerging technology that offered an alternative to antidepressant medications and ECT in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. We and our patients have been very pleased with the high success rate we have seen in the treatment of patients who had failed to respond or who have experienced unacceptable side effects from medications for depression. We and our patients have found that TMS is generally safe and well tolerated; patients report very few side effects.
BayTMS is the TMS division of Bay Psychiatric Associates. Since 1994, Bay Psychiatric Associates (BPA) has endeavored to provide the highest quality of psychiatric care to the people we serve. Our clinicians have expertise in multiple areas of mental health including treatment-resistant depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, personality disorders, alternative medicine, aging, substance abuse, child and adolescent problems, eating disorders, Attention deficit disorder, forensics and women’s issues. We strongly believe that one size does not fit all and effective treatment must be tailored to the individual.
Bay Psychiatric Associates was founded initially to provide inpatient psychiatric services at the Herrick Campus of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC). Subsequently, we have grown to encompass a wide range of treatment settings serving the diverse population of the Bay Area. Through our partnership with ABSMC, our psychiatrists provide treatment at the hospital-based inpatient and partial hospitalization programs as well as intensive outpatient treatment, eating disorders, consultation-liaison and ECT programs, in addition to TMS Therapy.
TMS represents a new approach to the treatment of mental disorders and offers an alternative to medication. When medications are give the drug circulates throughout the body and to all parts of the brain, thus often causing unwanted side effects. TMS, however, is a targeted treatment that is designed to treat only the part of the brain that is not functioning well. This is called neuromodulation; we believe that in the future neuromodulation will become more and more important in psychiatry and may some day be used even more frequently than medication.
Our TMS office has grown over the years. We now have five psychiatrists - Dr. Rick Trautner, Dr. Bob Dolgoff, Dr. Anneke Post, Dr. Lawrence Cohen, and Dr. Derek Schumm. We have continued to grow and have seen many patients successfully achieve remission from depression with TMS Therapy. We are contracted with a number of major insurance companies and will work hard to help you get insurance coverage. Contact us today to see if TMS might be a good treatment option for you.
